RBR Muzik and Arts Makes History

On June 4th at 10am, Irving Mayor Beth van Duyne will cut the ribbon on Irving’s first professional school for music and performing arts. The new 3000 square ft space has state of the art practice rooms with grand pianos and a beautiful stage for in-house performances.

For the first time, in one location, residents age 3-93 can take lessons in a variety of genres on a variety of instruments including piano, violin, guitar, voice and drums - all taught by hand selected professional faculty, some from top schools such as Julliard and Eastman School of Music. Conveniently located minutes from Hwy 161, the school, founded by a mother of 7 classically trained musicians, is open 7 days a week with lessons available in the early morning hours, as well as on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons.

“I love teaching,” says owner Zoe Schommer who has taught private piano lessons in her home for 9 years . “But let’s face it; private music lessons are expensive. For years, friends have seen my children and students perform and say they wish they could afford to get their child started in music. I knew one way to make it possible would be through instrument specific group classes. Opening a commercial location allows me to offer group piano, voice and guitar for as low as $80 a month.”

RBR Muzik stands for Rhythm Before Reading, a phrase Zoe is trademarking. “It has been proven again and again that exposure to music education in children’s early years accelerates all areas of cognitive learning,” Zoe explains. “And yet, music is the first thing cut from schools. We are all naturally musical from the first beat of our heart. My mission is to teach children rhythm before they learn to read, and to nurture the beat they were born with. My legacy will be to make music lessons affordable for everyone in our community. There is a hunger and a need. I believe we will fill it quickly.” All of Zoe’s children began their musical training around 3 or 4. They’ve taken 1st place in various categories for the last 5 years in the Irving’s talent competition, Irving’s Got Talent. They also earn top scores on academic tests (including 2 perfect scores on 2 SAT subject tests). She credits their academic excellence to their early music training. And, she’s honored to offer the same benefits to other children in the community.

This summer, RBR Muzik is offering music and drama camps for students age 5-17. These camps were designed by Zoe the mom, as well as the piano teacher. “For each class, I thought, ‘what are the camps I wish were available for my children?’ Then I wrote the descriptions and found stellar faculty. I think a music school run by a mom will be able to serve parents in our community in a personal way. I know what it is like. The teacher needs to be able to motivate children to practice. That’s why I hand select teachers that are good enough to teach my own children. There are so many talented artists in our community. Finally, we don’t have to drive to Dallas or Plano to find them.”
